サーフミュージックは、サーフィンカルチャーと深く結びついた音楽のジャンルだ。特に1960年代初頭のアメリカ西海岸で隆盛を極め、そのサウンドは、太陽が降り注ぐビーチや、波に乗る爽快感を彷彿とさせる。
このジャンルは主に二つのタイプに分けられる。一つはインストゥルメンタル・サーフで、エレキギターの独特なリバーブ（残響）を効かせたサウンドが特徴だ。ベンチャーズやディック・デイルといったアーティストが代表的で、彼らの音楽は波のうねりや、サーフボードの上でのスピード感をギターの音色で表現している。ボーカルはなく、ギターが主役となり、まるで波に乗っているかのような疾走感やメランコリックな雰囲気を生み出す。
もう一つはボーカル・サーフだ。これはビーチ・ボーイズに代表されるように、サーフィンや車、女の子といった、当時の若者のライフスタイルを歌ったものが主流だ。彼らのハーモニーは明るく健康的で、リラックスしたビーチの空気や、仲間たちと過ごす楽しい時間を音楽で表現している。インストゥルメンタル・サーフが波そのものを表現するのに対し、ボーカル・サーフはサーフィンを取り巻く文化や精神を歌にしたものだと言えるだろう。
現代においても、サーフミュージックは形を変えながら生き続けている。ジャック・ジョンソンやドノヴァン・フランケンレイターのように、アコースティックギターを基調とした、より穏やかでリラックスしたサウンドは「メロウ・サーフ」や「アコースティック・サーフ」と呼ばれ、今も多くのサーファーに愛されている。

The other type is vocal surf. As exemplified by The Beach Boys, this style primarily features songs about the lifestyle of young people at the time, including surfing, cars, and girls. Their harmonies are bright and wholesome, expressing the relaxed beach atmosphere and the fun times spent with friends through music. While instrumental surf expresses the waves themselves, vocal surf puts the culture and spirit surrounding surfing into song.
Even today, surf music continues to live on, evolving its form. The more mellow and relaxed sound, based on acoustic guitar, by artists like Jack Johnson and Donavon Frankenreiter, is known as “mellow surf” or “acoustic surf” and is still beloved by many surfers.
