Eddie Aikau was a great Hawaiian surfer, lifeguard, and a true hero. He was one of the first surfers to tackle the legendary big waves at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and he carved his name into the surfing world with his bravery and skill. He surfed waves at Waimea that everyone at the time considered impossible to ride.
However, his achievements extended beyond surfing. As a lifeguard at Waimea Bay, he saved countless lives. His courage and never-give-up spirit, even in the most difficult situations, made him a source of pride for the people of Hawaii, and he is revered as a “legend.”
His life came to a tragic end. In 1978, while serving as a crew member on the Polynesian voyaging canoe “Hōkūleʻa,” he was caught in a storm. He paddled out on his surfboard into the rough seas to seek help, and was never seen again. He never returned, but his spirit of self-sacrifice is still told to this day.
In honor of his achievements, “The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau,” one of the world’s premier big-wave surfing contests, is held every winter at Waimea Bay, the place he loved. This contest is one of the most special events in the surfing world, and it is only held when the wave size reaches the extremely demanding condition of 20 feet (6 meters) or more.
